# Liquid Delamination and Seam Failure

Human page: https://retifist.com/literature-reviews/liquid-delamination-seam-failure

## Executive summary

Read the broken join before adding latex. Adhesive vs cohesive vs fiber-pull vs rubber-tear as peel literacy.[^1][^2] Multi-dip **ply split** is a separate class: underlayer dried or leached, or low humidity.[^5] ASTM peel methods are lab classes.

Pair with [Liquid adhesives](/literature-reviews/liquid-adhesives-and-seam-integrity) and [Liquid reinforcement](/literature-reviews/liquid-reinforcement-laminate-zones).

## Peel modes

| Mode | Cue | Class |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Adhesive | Glue one side only | Prep / contamination / polarity |
| Cohesive | Glue split | Weak film, slow dry, restricted coalescence |
| Fiber-pull | Textile in the glue | Textile side lost |
| Rubber-tear | Film fails bulk | Film weaker than the bond |
| Ply split | Dip layers separate | Wet-gel timing / leach / RH |

Peel rate can flip mode in a cited PSA system.[^3]

## Multi-dip ply split

Inter-ply bond drops when the first layer is dried and leached; fresh wet gel maximizes adhesion. Fatty soaps (potassium caprylate) hurt inter-ply adhesion.[^5] Low RH can impair second-dip lamination.[^4]

## Decision flow

```text
1. Inspect both faces
2. Classify mode (include ply split)
3. Edge vs mid-panel
4. Fresh vs aged
5. Re-prep vs wet-gel timing vs redesign lap vs retire
```

## Aged aqueous adhesive

Latex adhesives can be slow drying.[^4] Crosslinking improves temperature/age/water/solvent resistance and reduces tack. Sulfur-donor PSA ages better than free sulfur (tape context).[^4] Heat/oxidation can soften or embrittle films.[^4] NR latex adhesive retains high-MW rubber vs solvent-milled NR.[^4]

Gazeley (in HPL v3): inter-ply bond drops when the first layer is dried and leached; minimize drying/leaching; avoid excess fatty soaps.[^5]
