# Prevulcanized Consumer Latex

> **Safety.** Prevulcanization is factory liquid-state cure with curatives. Ammonia and accelerators still matter. See [Allergy and Skin Contact](/literature-reviews/allergy-and-skin-contact).

## Executive summary

Prevulcanized latex is vulcanized in the liquid. A proper prevulc deposit can develop high tensile with drying alone (~4,000–5,000 psi when particles integrate).[^1] Gloves from prevulcanized latex need only warm-air drying.[^2] Overcure in the tank makes short, weak rubber.[^1] Prevulc films peak at lower crosslink (relaxed modulus ~0.4–0.5 MPa) than postvulc films; particle integration on drying is the limiter.[^3]

Do not assume every consumer bottle is prevulcanized NR. Raw concentrate is not a finished article without compounding.[^1] Styrene-acrylic theatrical dispersions are a different polymer family. Read [Decoding liquid latex bottle labels](/literature-reviews/liquid-decoding-bottle-labels).

## Dry-only vs oven-cure

| Feedstock | Typical finish branch |
| --- | --- |
| Proper prevulc NR compound | Warm-air dry may suffice[^1][^2] |
| Raw / under-compounded latex | Post-form vulcanization after dry |
| Unknown consumer bottle | Read TDS; treat as non-prevulc until proven |

Plants use chloroform / swell QC.[^1]

**Contradiction, keep loci labeled:** Practical Guide casting section: strength always low for film from prevulcanized compound. Vanderbilt prevulc definition: proper prevulc can approach conventional properties.[^1]

## Shelf life and clarifying

Remove unreacted sulfur and zinc oxide by centrifuge or decant to limit further cure in storage. Add antioxidants after clarifying so they are not consumed in the heat step.[^1]

---

## Branch mix-ups

- Prevulc dry-only logic on raw concentrate
- Medical glove prevulc TDS on theatrical acrylic bottle

Heat 70–80 °C hold (handbook example: about an hour at 79 °C); cool; clarify. Ultra-accelerators allow atmospheric cure below 100 °C.[^1]

Deep dive: Modulus peak

Postvulc tensile maximum near relaxed modulus ~0.8 MPa. Prevulc maximum ~0.4–0.5 MPa. High-crosslink drop in prevulcanizates: particle integration failure on drying.[^3]
