# Sheet Hardware & Metal Contact

## Executive summary

Snaps and eyelets on cut sheet are stress concentrators and metal contact points. Brass, copper, and unverified platings catalyze NR oxidative aging and leave stain halos that polishing does not reverse.[^1][^2][^3] Inspect worn sheet for green/brown rings and stiffness gradients. Barrier washers reduce contact; they do not erase copper chemistry.

## Why metals matter

Trace copper (copper oleate in Sudsai) catalyzes degradation of unsaturated rubber.[^3] Brass and copper fittings cause serious deterioration of rubber in latex.[^1] Films exposed to copper: **2 phr** total antioxidant, split between oxidation and copper reserve.[^2]

## Hardware taxonomy

Selection and inspection only. No install sequence.

| Hardware | Typical contact on sheet | Primary risk |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Press snap | Punctured disk stack | Plated brass, unknown substrate |
| Eyelet / grommet | Crimped barrel | Crevice + sweat |
| D-ring / buckle | Line load + metal face | Galvanized budget steel |
| Corset busk | Broad contact | Carbon-steel corrosion stain |

---

## Finish vs substrate

Marketing labels (gunmetal, antique brass, nickel finish) do not prove substrate. Stainless-looking ≠ verified 304/316. Prefer vendor documentation of base metal; spot-test scrap sheet before batch install.

---

## Avoid / conditional / OK

| Metal / finish | Direct NR sheet contact | Mitigation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Copper, brass, bronze | **Avoid** | Change hardware; polish is cosmetic |
| Galvanized (wet / sweat) | **Avoid** | Wet zinc-coated steel |
| Verified 304 / 316 stainless | **Conditional** | Plant-acceptable metal; sweat crevice still possible |
| Plastic / nylon washer | **Conditional** | Barrier only; copper chemistry remains if metal touches rubber |
| Unknown plated snap | **Avoid** until tested | Scrap-panel test |

---

## Inspection cues

- Brown/green halo concentric to the fastener
- Stiff ring in sheet around an eyelet
- Crack initiation at the punched hole under strain
- Faster aging than the adjacent panel (compare bend feel)

Growing halo → replace hardware. Polish does not stop catalysis.

ASTM D925: contact, migration, and diffusion staining under heat, pressure, and sunlight. Method class for documenting a halo, not a garment pass/fail.[^4]
