# Sheet Surface Finish

## Executive summary

Calendered fashion sheet arrives with a mill-set face. Vendor catalogs may list gloss/matte or a shinier face and a duller back. Powder after storage is often wax bloom: a migrating antidegradant layer, not shop dirt.[^1][^2]

Use this when reading a purchased roll before [print](/literature-reviews/sheet-printing-surface-decoration) or glue, or when stored sheet looks dusty. Storage: [Aging, Storage and Care](/literature-reviews/sheet-aging-storage-and-care).

---

## Purchased face

Calendered sheet is pressed to gauge between heated mill rollers. Both faces are mill output. Formation context: [Calendered Sheet](/literature-reviews/sheet-calendered-sheet).

Retail catalogs may advertise a polishable upper and a roughened underside. Treat that as vendor menu language. A dull side is not automatically the glue side; confirm with a bond coupon ([Adhesives and Seam Integrity](/literature-reviews/sheet-adhesives-and-seam-integrity)).

---

## Bloom after storage

Microcrystalline wax at 0.5–1.0 phr forms a surface bloom that protects against **static** ozone. Flex and stretch break the bloom barrier.[^1] Peer work treats NR bloom as a migrating layer, not leftover talc.[^2] Wiping the powder can return tack if bloom was the only ozone shield.

PPD antiozonants stain dark goods. That is a different finish class from wax bloom.[^1]

---

## Tack on bought sheet

Talc is temporary handling de-tack. It does not permanently change the rubber face. Tack returning after a wipe on stored film usually means bloom was removed.

## Reading cues

| Observation | First reading |
| --- | --- |
| One side glossy, one dull | Vendor finish menu. Bond-test before assigning a glue side. |
| Powder after storage | Wax bloom. |
| Tack after a wipe | Bloom removed. |

Deep dive: Wax bloom timing

Allow bloom time before ozone exposure. Handbook example: weeks at 23°C / 50% RH in kraft wrapping. Dynamic wear defeats the wax barrier. PPD antiozonant routes apply to flexed dark goods.[^1]
