# Sheet Zipper Closure Compatibility

Human page: https://retifist.com/literature-reviews/sheet-zipper-closure-compatibility

> **Safety.** Solvent rubber cement on sheet: flammable vapor; ventilate.[^2] Cleaners at the tape edge can attack the bond. Grid: [Compatibility Matrix](/literature-reviews/compatibility-matrix-metals-oils-plastics).

## Executive summary

Compatibility of zipper tape, coil, and stops with commercial sheet. Continuous-filament nylon and polyester present a smooth, waxlike face with poor mechanical bonding to rubber unless a prep bridge is used.[^1] Metal coil is a metal-contact problem ([sheet hardware](/literature-reviews/sheet-hardware-metal-contact)). ASTM D2054 is zipper-*tape* textile crocking, not NR-sheet bond strength.[^4]

## Components

| Part | Compatibility question |
| --- | --- |
| Woven tape | Fiber (cotton vs nylon vs PET); prep need |
| Coil / teeth | Nylon vs metal → sheet hardware if metal |
| Stops / pull | Material + solvent-cleaner exposure |

---

## Nylon and polyester tape

Cotton: protruding fiber ends embed in the rubber matrix. Rayon, nylon (polyamide), and polyester: continuous filament, smooth waxlike surface, poor mechanical bond unless abraded or chemically bridged.[^1]

Non-porous faces: latex polarity should match the surfaces to be joined. Handbook polarity band: NR / SBR / BR / IIR at the low end; NBR / XNBR at the high end.[^3]

Industrial analog: abrasion plus latex–casein dip on tire cord. Combined effect greater than either step alone under dynamic conditions.[^1]

## Decision cues

```text
cotton → mechanical key easier
nylon / PET → prep bridge before solvent cement
metal coil → compatibility matrix + sheet hardware
solvent cement on sheet → sheet adhesives
water-based coat on tape → [Liquid Zipper Closure Compatibility](/literature-reviews/liquid-zipper-closure-compatibility)
```

Latex-adhesive shrink and aqueous tape coats are on the liquid zipper page.[^2][^5]
