Safety

Read this before you open glue or thinner. Retifist desk builds use rubber cement and heptane-based thinner. Vapors are flammable, heavier than air, and easy to underestimate on a small table. Keep volumes small, ventilate from the floor up, and cut with a clear overhead view.

Heptane vapor sinks

Heptane vapor is heavier than air. It does not hang at face height and disappear out a high window on its own — it sinks, pools on the floor, and can creep under doors or into low ducts.

What that means at a desk

  • Floor-level exhaust (or a fan aimed to pull air along the floor toward an open exit) matters more than a ceiling vent alone.
  • If your only “vent” is high, vapor can still build on the floor while the room “feels” fine at nose height.
  • Keep ignition sources off at floor level too: pilot lights, space heaters, and sparking motors near the glue zone.

Quantity and spill control

You typically only need about half a soda can of thinner/working mix in a day of desk work. Do not keep a large open volume on the table.

  1. Decant what you need into a small cup or dab bottle.
  2. Cap the main bottle and move it away from the glue zone.
  3. Any spill is then limited by what is in the small vessel — not the whole can.

Same idea for rubber cement: mix small batches so less surface area sits open during curl waits.

Cutting with open blades

Scissors and craft knives are part of every lesson. Treat them like any open blade:

  • Good light; look down from above so you see the cut line and both hands.
  • One hand guides/holds the material; the other operates the tool.
  • Sharp tools cut cleaner with less force — less chance of slipping into a finger.
  • Controlled cuts only. Do not cut toward a hand you cannot see.

Heptane / Bestine-type thinner

Cited: Speedball Bestine Solvent & Thinner SDS (n-heptane; also covers Best-Test rubber cement thinner branding) and CITGO Heptane (19043) SDS.

What to do (SDS posture, short): adequate ventilation / cross-breeze; no smoking; keep containers closed; absorb small spills with non-combustible absorbent; move to fresh air if you feel lightheaded.

Rubber cement / contact cement (example)

Cited: DAP Weldwood Original Contact Cement SDS (flash point −6 °C; vapors can flow along surfaces to a distant ignition source and flash back). Your latex cement brand may differ — use that product’s SDS — but expect the same class of solvent hazards when the can lists heptane or similar aliphatics.

Series 1 posture (desk-scale)

  1. Open windows / start air moving before opening glue or decanted thinner.
  2. Decant half-a-soda-can scale (or less), then cap the main thinner.
  3. Small glue batches; less open surface during waits.
  4. Remember floor pooling — pull air from the bottom of the room when you can.
  5. Fresh-air break if a session runs long.
