Sheet Reinforcement Zones

Executive summary

Reinforcement on bought sheet is extra material at a place that will tear or peel: a disc where seams meet, a strip along a strap root, a second layer of gauge at an opening. Add it before final assembly traps the junction. Use this when mapping stress zones or when a junction already failed once.

Industrial fabric-lined gloves stretch less than unsupported gloves but stop a tear from running. That is a supported-glove analog, not a catsuit lining card. Glue family for sticking the extra piece down: Sheet adhesives.

Seam junction (3+ panels)Peel and tear concentrateDisc or cross strip before close-out
Opening edge (neck, arm, fly)Cyclic stretch + edge liftStrip or doubled gauge at the tape line
Strap / harness rootLine load into the sheetWide strip; avoid a point load

The map is where stress concentrates, not a cut list.

Decision cues

text
1. What is the job?
   ├─ Tear-stop → extra sheet or a fabric liner (supported-glove analog)
└─ Stretch management → a stiff patch in a high-bend zone will fight the body

2. Can you still reach the junction?
├─ Yes → add disc / strip / double gauge now
└─ Already closed out → you are patching the outside; the trapped corner stays

3. Textile in the stack?
├─ Porous cotton → mechanical key possible
   └─ Smooth nylon → polarity / pretreat — [Sheet latex–textile bonding](/literature-reviews/sheet-latex-textile-bonding)

Deep dives (optional)

Deep dive: Supported-glove analog

Fabric-lined gloves stretch less than unsupported gloves. The liner’s job in that chapter is stopping tear propagation, not matching fashion-sheet stretch. Oil-resistance order in the same handbook neighborhood: NR < CR < XNBR. That is dipped-goods language, useful only as a reminder that a liner trades stretch for durability.
