Sheet Zipper Closure Compatibility

Safety. Solvent rubber cement on sheet is a flammable-vapor job. Ventilate. Cleaners at the tape edge can attack the bond. See the Compatibility Matrix.

Executive summary

Use this when you pick a zipper for commercial sheet: tape fiber, coil metal, and whether the tape face can take a solvent cement. Nylon coil is common because it is cheap and flexible. Continuous-filament nylon is also a smooth, waxlike face. Rubber does not get a mechanical key the way it does on cotton fuzz.

Metal coil is a metal-contact problem. Treat it as sheet hardware. Glue-family choices sit in Sheet Adhesives and Seam Integrity. Cotton vs nylon bond cues sit in Sheet Latex Textile Bonding.

What is a prep bridge?

A prep bridge is a surface treatment (abrasion, primer, or a latex coat) that gives a slick filament tape something for cement to grip. Cotton tape has fiber ends that embed in rubber. Nylon and polyester do not.

Nylon and polyester tape

Rayon, nylon, and polyester are continuous filaments with smooth, waxlike surfaces. Cotton has protruding fiber ends that embed in the rubber matrix. That is why a raw nylon tape often peels when you cement it to sheet the way you would cement cotton.

On a non-porous face, latex polarity should match the two surfaces. Natural rubber is the low-polarity end of the handbook’s list (NR, SBR, BR, IIR). Nitrile sits at the high end.

Industrial tire-cord work abrades the filament, then runs a latex–casein dip. That is factory lineage, not a home recipe.

Decision cues

text
Tape fiber?
cotton → mechanical key is easier
nylon / PET → prep bridge before solvent cement
Coil metal?
yes → compatibility matrix + sheet hardware
Adhesive?
solvent cement on sheet → sheet adhesives
water-based coat on the tape → [liquid zipper](/literature-reviews/liquid-zipper-closure-compatibility)

Deep dives (optional)

Deep dive: Nylon filament mechanical bond

Abrasion plus a latex–casein dip beats either step alone under dynamic strain. That is factory tire-cord lineage, not a home recipe.

Deep dive: ASTM D2054 scope

ASTM D2054 is colorfastness of zipper tapes to crocking. Textile QC on the tape. It is not a bond-strength method for NR sheet.
