Decoding Consumer Latex Bottle Labels: Concentrate Fields vs Marketing

Executive summary

Consumer “liquid latex” bottles rarely print the same fields industrial buyers expect on concentrate specs. Liquid latex work shoppers need to decode ammonia band, total solids, prevulcanized vs raw, and polymer family — not marketing words like “body safe” or “FDA.” ASTM D1076 and ISO 2004 define ammonia-preserved NR concentrate categories; they do not apply to compounded hobby bottles.

Label fields that actually mean something

ASTM D1076 covers concentrated, ammonia-stabilized NR latex categories and does not apply to compounded concentrates. ISO 2004 specifies ammonia-preserved centrifuged/creamed concentrate types including HA, LA, and MA bands with Cu/Mn limits on total solids.

What are HA, LA, and MA ammonia bands?

ISO 2004 types include high-ammonia (HA), low-ammonia (LA), and medium-ammonia (MA) centrifuged/creamed concentrate with copper and manganese caps on total solids. Effective preservation typically needs >0.35% ammonia; long storage often 0.6–1.0% by weight. Without an ammonia number on the TDS, you cannot place the bottle on the map.

A craft bottle that omits total solids content (TSC), ammonia %, mechanical stability time (MST), and polymer family is not auditable against those specs.

Prevulcanized latex is vulcanized in the liquid state; a proper prevulcanized deposit can approach conventional post-dried properties; overcure yields short, weak rubber. Gloves from prevulcanized latex need only warm-air drying in the dipped-goods branch — read the bottle/TDS before assuming dry-only finishes your garment film.

Fresh latex coagulates within hours without preservation; ammonia is the primary preservative in NR concentrate.

Do not assume every bottle is prevulcanized NR because it dries tack-free.

Deep dive: Prevulcanized vs post-cure branch

Prevulcanized NR films peak tensile at lower modulus than postvulcanized films because high crosslink can limit particle integration on drying. Gloves from prevulcanized latex need only warm air drying. Post-form oven vulcanization of dried compound is a separate branch — do not merge the branches from a marketing blurb alone.
