Surface Finish Literacy: Gloss, Matte, Bloom & Chlorination Cues

Executive summary
Gloss and matte often come from how the film was formed, not from a post-cure polish alone. Tack may be cut temporarily (talc) or permanently (halogenation). Bloom is a migrating layer — not necessarily dirt.
Use this when reading sheet faces, when storage-related surface change appears, or before printing on a face whose finish you did not control.

Liquid latex work — former finish
What is a glazed vs bisque former?
A glazed former has a smooth, polished surface — dipped or cast film against it dries shiny with vibrant color. A bisque (or sandblasted) former has a micro-rough face — film dries dull and matte. The finish is baked in during formation, not applied like furniture polish afterward.
Glazed → shiny; bisque/sandblast → dull.
Halogenation
Halogenation (chlorination) permanently reduces surface tack. Handbook example parameters: ~0.15% Cl, 4.5–7.5 min tumble; neutralize, rinse, dry 40–46°C; no copper or brass contact.
This is industrial vocabulary — not a home procedure guide. Chlorinated faces change how inks and adhesives behave.
Bloom
What is wax bloom?
Wax bloom is antidegradant wax migrating to the rubber surface to form a temporary ozone barrier. Microcrystalline wax at 0.5–1.0 phr blooms over hours; flexing and stretching crack the bloom layer and reduce protection. Bloom looks like chalky powder — it is chemistry, not necessarily dirt.

Sheet-based work note
Calendered sheet may ship with distinct face and back finishes from the mill. Vendor menus describe gloss/matte options — read the catalog rather than guessing which face prints best.
