Sheet-based work — cement, thinner, ignition
Representative rubber-cement SDS sheets classify heptane or light aliphatic naphtha as highly flammable liquid and vapor, with storage cool, tightly closed, well-ventilated, away from heat/sparks/flame.
What is an SDS?
An SDS (Safety Data Sheet) is the manufacturer’s official hazard document. For any solvent cement or thinner, the SDS on the can overrides forum advice on flammability, ventilation, and first aid.
Apply cement with local exhaust or strong cross-ventilation toward the outside — not recirculation into a bedroom without an exhaust path.
Seal cans immediately after use; evaporation is concentrated vapor release.
Remove ignition sources from the work zone: open flames, some space heaters, sparking switches.
OSHA flammable-liquids rules define closed containers and workplace storage frames — residential hobby limits vary by jurisdiction; read local guidance rather than inventing gallon limits.
Liquid latex work — ammonia, powders, compounding hygiene
Handbook laboratory health sections require ventilation; note prolonged ammonia fumes are hazardous and recommend low-ammonia latex plus ventilation when ammonia is the driver. The same sections require always add acid or alkali to water, never the reverse; respirators when dumping powders; wash skin; and acknowledge rubber-chemical sensitization.
Compound on a wettable, clean surface with ventilation when ammonia odor is strong — especially with high-ammonia concentrate types (see Decoding Consumer Latex Bottle Labels).
Weigh powders with local exhaust or a respirator rated for fine dust per supplier SDS.
Metal hygiene: never copper alloys; avoid galvanized fittings that contact latex.
Ventilation does not replace skin-contact allergy literacy.
Shared shop rules
- Read the SDS for every cement, thinner, latex, and compounding powder — class hazards beat brand folklore.
- Separate storage: flammable solvents away from heat; liquid latex away from copper/brass contact.
- Closed containers when not actively in use.
- Laundry work clothes that saw powder or solvent mist.
- Do not eat in the active work zone.
